February 24th - 27th
Thank you to our parent volunteers who were able to join us on our walking field trip to Fish Creek Park. It was a beautiful morning!
What did students do this week?
At Fish Creek Park, students had a wonderful time being on the land with the lovely weather. While at Fish Creek, the grade fours looked at signs of winter through the Indigenous lens, used a compass, and reflected on what they appreciate about this space.
In reading, students continued to demonstrate their understanding of their research about an influential person for Black History Month. They represented their learning through drawing a symbol and writing facts. In addition, to recognize Pink Shirt Day, we read a story called You Hold Me Up. Students reflected on ways that we all hold each other up through kindness and created visual journal pages.
In writing, students continued with their poetry books, including different figurative language. They are coming along amazingly well.
In math, students started their "math folders." These folders help students to practice recalling their multiplication facts up to 12 x 12.
- I can apply comprehension strategies when reading texts.
- I can discuss a variety of facts in non-fiction texts.
- I can make text to self connections to support my understanding.
- I can look at how a variety of poetic structures support creative expression of ideas.
- I can experiment with creating different types of poetry.
- I can recall and apply multiplication number facts, with factors to 12.
Possible Questions to Ask Your Child:
- Which influential Black Canadian did you choose to research?
- What did this person do to create change?
- How do we lift each other up?
- What does Pink Shirt Day mean to you?
- Can you give me an example of personification?
- What multiplication facts are you working on?
- What does the cycle look like for your math folder? (4-Square Model, flash cards and games, word problems, and quiz). Which step of the cycle are you on?
