February 18th - 21st
Thank you and your children for such a warm welcome back. Your patience, flexibility, and kindness are appreciated. It is lovely to be back with your kiddos!
What did students do this week?
Since February is Black History Month, in reading, students learned about Black Canadians who have shaped our country. After reading about some influential people, students chose one who they would like to research. They read and watched videos to learn important dates and why this Canadian made such a difference to our history and how they paved the way for our future. This work is not yet completed but students have done a great job so far!
In writing, students continued to work with figurative language. They worked on writing a poem about their favourite place, including examples of personification.
In math, to review adding and subtracting decimal numbers, the students played different games. Some of these will be sent home next week so you can practice together!
- I can apply comprehension strategies when reading texts.
- I can discuss a variety of facts in non-fiction texts.
- I can look at how a variety of poetic structures support creative expression of ideas.
- I can experiment with creating different types of poetry.
- I can add and subtract numbers, including decimal numbers, using standard algorithms.
Possible Questions to Ask Your Child:
- Which influential Black Canadian did you choose to research?
- What did this person do to create change?
- What symbol did you choose to represent this person?
- What place did you choose to write about for your favourite place poem?
- What is personification?
- What examples of personification did you use in your poem?
- What is 4 392.63 - 265.7?
- What is important to remember when adding and subtracting decimal numbers?
