What did students do this week?
It was another great week in grade four.
In reading, students read about The Rocky Mountain Region. They read about its important cities, landforms, Indigenous communities and history, and natural resources. They compared this information to what they previously learned about The Grasslands.
We finished our class read aloud of the novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. As we read this novel, students made predictions, connections, and summaries.
In writing, students continued their work of adding sensory detail. They completed their folders about their Imperfectly Perfect Pet. This has been a great process; the students learned a lot and were very engaged. This task was focused on the picture book The Barnabus Project. After their task was finished, we read the follow-up book Barnaby Unboxed. Students made exciting connections between this book, the first one, and our class read aloud.
In math, students worked on adding decimal numbers. They talked about different strategies, including the standard algorithm. Then, they applied this understanding to many problem solving tasks. The students focused on the problem solving process: What information do we already know? What information are we trying to find out? Where can I start? What steps and strategies are needed to solve it? How do I know my solution is correct?
- I can experiment with sensory detail to add interest to my writing.
- I can experiment with word choice to catch my reader's attention.
Possible Questions to Ask Your Child:
- What did you learn about The Rocky Mountain Region?
- What sensory detail did you use to describe your pet?
- What sensory detail did you use to describe your pet's perfect home?
- What was your favourite part of the Imperfectly Perfect Pet task?
- What is 36.29 + 28.35? How did you solve it?
- When you solved the problem with three items, how did you figure out their prices?
