December 2nd - 6th
What did students do this week?
In small reading groups, students continued to read articles to learn about how the perspectives on fossils changed over time. After reading, they wrote from the perspective of a person in the specific time we read about.
After reading more chapters in our class read aloud of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, students added to their timeline representing the different adventures Edward went on. This identified their understanding of main events in the story. Then, they wrote a reflection based on how they think the characters in the story felt based on clues from the text to develop their inferencing.
In writing, students had a great time bringing their Imperfectly Perfect Pet to life! They turned their design into a pet using plasticine. Next week, they will use sensory details to write about their pet.
In math, students worked with decimal numbers through money. They combined different amounts of money, represented the amounts through decimals, and started adding decimal numbers.
- I can infer ideas through using clues in the text.
- I can summarize key information.
- I can use sensory detail to add interest to my work.
- I can develop creative expression through different tools.
- I can express the value of money in decimal numbers.
Possible Questions to Ask Your Child:
- What did people think about fossils in the 1980s? How has the perspectives of fossils changed over time?
- How do you think Nellie and Lawrence felt after they realized Edward was gone? What clues in the text made you think that?
- Use sensory details to describe your Imperfectly Perfect Pet.
- How would you represent a quarter in a decimal number? What about a nickel? What would a nickel, two dimes, and two quarters equal?
