October 28th - November 1st

What did students do this week?

The grade fours had a great week of learning and a lot of fun with Halloween tasks. They had their first meeting with their grade one buddies; they were patient and kind role models!

In reading, students pulled key information from different texts about the Grasslands Region, which connects to our Social Studies curriculum. They organized their information into important categories. Then, they chose one key point that they wanted to represent and put it onto a small piece of paper which will go on our class map.

In writing, students continued with their procedural writing. They wrote clear, detailed instructions about how to draw Halloween pictures, like ghosts. They also worked towards adding an introductory sentence and concluding sentence.

In math, students started exploring decimals by solving a problem. They were presented with a problem and could use any strategy they thought would be effective. Then, they learned the different ways decimal numbers can be represented. On Halloween, students solved another problem through using mental math and perseverance.

English Language Arts and Literature Learning Outcomes  (I can...)
  • I can read and show comprehension of texts.
  • I can understand that procedural writing is organized to share information.
  • I can logically order my ideas.
  • I can include a topic sentence and concluding sentence in my procedural text.
  • I can revise my writing to make it clearer.
Mathematics Learning Intentions (I can...)
  • I can make decisions to problem solve.
  • I can recognize that decimal numbers can be represented in different ways.

Possible Questions to Ask Your Child:

  • What is one thing you learned through your reading about the Grasslands? What did you draw on your square for the map?
  • What steps did you write to draw a ghost? How did you revise your work after a classmate drew it on a white board?
  • How did you solve the "string problem" in math? How can decimal numbers be represented?
